DHQ Hospital Gujranwala was founded in 1925 by the then Governor of Punjab, Sir Malcolm Haley. From time to time different departments were established. District Headquarters Hospital is attached to Gujranwala Medical College as a teaching hospital. 

DHQ Hospital Gujranwala is a 450-bed healthcare facility located on a cross road in six districts. It caters to about 4.00 million people in the district and about 1 million people in the surrounding districts. It is the only public sector health institute for the entire population of Gujranwala city. It also serves as a referral hospital for surrounding districts.
